Overview

Module 1 provides a basic introduction to the role of natural resources and the environment in contributing to conflict and peacebuilding. It explores the benefits of addressing these issues as part of peacekeeping operations and outlines individual responsibilities for environmental management, drawing on the DFS/DPKO Environmental Policy.

Module 2 provides an overview of the entry points for peacekeepers to contribute to the improvement of national governance over natural resources and highlights ways to improve implementation of peacekeeping mandates. This module examines the opportunities for: capacity building through the extension of state authority over natural resources, identifying the role of natural resources in security sector reform, improving legislation and management of natural resource concessions contracts, and guidance and involvement in voluntary certification schemes.
